Which New York jobs count as police officers here, and which don't?
These figures cover the New York City Police Department, the Nassau County and Suffolk County police departments, the Buffalo Police Department and the Port Authority Police, from each employer's own payroll file. We decided each title by hand.
Counted as officers
- Police Officers at the five departments. Every pay step, including Suffolk's Spanish-speaking officers and Nassau's officers assigned as pilots and mechanics.
- Port Authority officers in airport rescue and firefighting. Police officers who also crew the airport fire and rescue units.
- New York City's Environmental Police Officers. The sworn police of the Department of Environmental Protection, who guard the city's water supply. They count with New York City's officers.
Shown separately or left out
- Detectives, sergeants, lieutenants and captains. In the pay by rank table above, not in the officer figures. NYPD sergeants and lieutenants with a designated assignment, such as detective squad supervisors, count in their rank, and so do the detective sergeants, lieutenants and captains at Suffolk, Nassau and the Port Authority. Buffalo has no plain sergeant title: its detective sergeants are its sergeants.
- Deputy inspectors and higher command staff.
- Cadets, recruits and civilian police staff. Police administrative aides and Nassau's police medics, for example. The NYPD's 911 call takers are on the 911 dispatcher pages.
- Other police departments and county sheriff's deputies. More New York departments follow as we find payroll files that list job titles.

Sources for the New York police officer figures
Every person who held a police officer position at any point in the newest year each employer has published (2024 and 2025) counts toward the headcount. New York City's pay figures use only people still employed at the end of June 2025 who worked at least 90% of a full year's regular hours at their title's standard week. The other employers' files have no hours, so their figures use full-time staff who held the same title the year before and earned at least 90% of that year's pay (Suffolk and Nassau counties), who were paid their salary on at least 90% of the year's paydays (Buffalo), or who started before the year and were paid at least 90% of their own annual rate (Port Authority). Total pay is gross wages before tax, including overtime, lump sums and other pay. Every figure covers at least 5 people.
